Baked Crispy Chicken Wings Recipe

Crispy Wings in the Oven

You might be thinking that oven baked chicken wings will not be crispy. However, it is amazing how crispy they can be.

Baking wings in the oven instead of frying them is so simple and easy. They turn out delightfully crispy and tender every time. My entire family enjoys their wings and asks for them often.

Ingredients Used to Make Baked Wings

With a few simple ingredients and less than an hour baking, you will have the most scrumptious chicken ever. Here is what you will need.

Chicken Wings: Here you can use fresh wings or frozen. Often, when I purchase a fresh tray, they are already split with the tips removed and the flats and drumettes cut apart as well. However, frozen chicken wings are even faster and work perfectly fine. They will just take longer to bake in the oven as they have the thaw first. If you prefer, you can leave them whole.

Butter: I like to use salted butter in this recipe for the best flavor. However, if you prefer an oil or other butter substitute, go ahead, and use that. This recipe is pretty forgiving that way.

Spices. It just takes a few simple spices, salt, black pepper, garlic powder or onion powder if you prefer the taste, and paprika.

How to Make Baked Crispy Chicken Wings

Let’s explore how easy this recipe is. This truly is an easy chicken wings recipe. You can make this to feed just your family or a crowd. I use a half sheet baking pan, or a rimmed baking sheet fitted with a wire rack. (You can get the correct wire rack for the baking pan when you purchase both as a rack set). This allows the heat from the oven to get all around the wings. The result is a crispy, yet tender wing.

Oh, and for easy clean up, line the baking sheet with aluminum foil before you add the wire rack.

The tray will catch any excess fat that drips off the wing. If the wing sits in the fat, it will create too much moisture. Keeping the wings away from the moisture is essential in achieving a crispy exterior.

Melt the butter, in a large bowl add the spices, and toss the wings to coat them. Arrange them on the wire rack that is on the baking pan.

Bake in a pre-heated 400-degree Fahrenheit oven for 40 minutes. The wings are golden brown and fully cooked at this point.

Party Wings

Hosting a Party

This is a great tip for when you are hosting a party.

You can keep the wings on a low temperature setting in the oven for up to 1 hour as you continue preparing other food. The longer that the wings stay in the warm oven, the crispier they will get.

Depending on how many guests I have, I sometimes make 3 or 4 trays of wings. When they are done cooking, I will pile them all on two trays and place them back in the oven on warm and keep adding warm wings to the serving tray as needed.

Internal Temp of Chicken Wings
