What Kind of Pork Chops Do You Use?

For this recipe we used boneless pork chops, a bit thicker cut. You can also use a bone-in pork chop, pork steaks, or boneless pork loin chops. If you use a thinner cut chop, reduce the cooking time so the meat is not overcooked.

Ingredients Used to Make Smothered Pork Chops and Rice

The combination of these 7 ingredients really makes this is hands down one of my favorite pork chop recipes out there. It is quick and simple and hearty.

  • Pork Chops
  • Uncooked Rice. Use white rice, wild rice, or brown rice for this recipe.
  • Cream of Mushroom Soup
  • French Onion Soup
  • Onion

Do you Have to Brown Pork Chops Before Baking?

You do not have to brown pork chops before baking. If you do take a few minutes to brown them in a frying pan before baking, they will have a bit more flavor due to the caramelization on the outside of the meat.

However, when I am in a hurry and just need to get a great tasting meal to the table, I opt for just adding all the ingredients to the baking pan and popping it in the oven. That way, I can concentrate on the rest of the meal or take a few minutes for myself. This is a wonderful easy weeknight meal, but also perfect for a Sunday afternoon dinner.

Browning Pork Chops for baking. Just add a bit of olive oil to a skillet, using medium heat fry the chops on each side approximately 2-3 minutes on each side until they are caramelized. They will not be fully cooked through at this point. Let them finish cooking in the oven with the mushroom sauce.

If you choose to season pork chops, go ahead and sprinkle on a bit of salt, pepper, and garlic powder when frying. All of this is a great way to add even more taste to this flavorful meal. Continue with the recipe and add the browned pork chops on top of the rice.

Is it Better to Cook Pork Chops Fast or Slow?

Slow cooking pork chops in the oven in a marinade is my favorite way to make my tender pork chops. It’s an easy and foolproof way to enjoy a fork tender cut of pork. Slow braising in the oven or the slow cooker are both wonderful low and slow cooking methods for pork chops.
