Grilled Cheese Recipe in the Oven

For years I had a cast iron skillet on the stovetop to get just lunch on the table for everyone to eat together. Even then, some would start with their soup first as it was difficult to fit more than two sandwiches in the pan. Even then, making two sandwiches at a time in a skillet are hard to make as it is hard to flip them.

Therefore, when I first made this upscale grilled cheese sandwich in the oven, it was a game changer. We still got the cheesy, crispy bread texture, but with this casserole, it is a bit heartier and more filling.

For this oven baked grilled cheese recipe, just layer in your bread, cheese, and bread again. Then mix your liquid ingredients and pour over the top and bake.

Sheet Pan Grilled Cheese

Another option for you if you just want a regular grilled cheese is to use a sheet pan versus a 9 x 13 baking pan and omit the liquid ingredients.

Just butter the bread, lay the slices of bread on the sheet pan with the buttered side down. Add your cheese slices and top with another slice of buttered bread with the butter facing up. Bake until there is gooey cheese and golden, crispy bread. Bake for about 10-15 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

How to Reheat Grilled Cheese

The quickest way to reheat a grilled cheese sandwich and get a crispy, toasty outside and melty cheese inside is to use a frying pan.

Start with a frying pan on the stovetop using medium heat allow the pan to warm for a minutes before adding the sandwich.

While the pan is heating, spread a thin layer of butter of mayonnaise on the outside of the grilled cheese.

Add the sandwich to the pan and cover with a lid. This helps melt the cheese faster.

After 1-2 minutes, flip the sandwich and cook another 1-2 minutes with the lid off. This allows the bread to crisp.

Once the bread has crisped to your desired crispiness, remove from the pan and enjoy.
