Why You’ll Love This Recipe

This no-cook red pizza sauce is the epitome of convenience and flavor. It’s ridiculously easy to make and requires only basic pantry ingredients. Plus, the fresh tomato flavor shines through, making it a hit with kids and adults alike. Whether you’re hosting a casual pizza night or looking for a quick meal solution, this sauce has got you covered.

Crushed Tomatoes

Crushed tomatoes form the base of the sauce, providing a rich and robust tomato flavor. Using high-quality canned tomatoes or fresh tomatoes ensures a vibrant and fresh taste, which is crucial for a delicious pizza sauce. If you prefer a smoother texture, try tomato sauce. Either choice will offer a smooth texture that spreads easily on the pizza dough.

Tomato Paste

Tomato paste is essentially concentrated tomato juice. Fresh tomatoes are cooked down, strained to remove larger solids, and then the resulting juice is further reduced to a moisture content of 76% or less

Extra-Virgin Olive Oil

Extra-virgin olive oil adds a depth of flavor and richness to the sauce. It enhances the tomato’s natural sweetness and provides a luxurious mouthfeel. Olive oil also helps to carry the flavors of the herbs and spices throughout the sauce. It’s great for adding a strong umami flavor to stews and braises.

Butter

Butter adds a subtle creaminess and smoothness to the sauce. It balances the acidity of the tomatoes and creates a velvety texture that enhances the overall richness of the sauce. According to Serious Eats, a blend of fats builds flavor. French chefs have known for years that adding butter to a sauce can help round off the rough edges and give it a richer, fuller mouthfeel. This pizza sauce is no exception.

Garlic

Garlic is a key flavor component in pizza sauce. It adds a pungent, savory depth that complements the sweetness of the tomatoes. Fresh garlic provides a robust flavor, while jarred garlic offers convenience without sacrificing too much taste.

Dried Oregano

Oregano is a classic herb in Italian cuisine, particularly in pizza sauce. It adds a warm, slightly bitter flavor that pairs perfectly with tomatoes. Dried oregano releases its flavors gradually, making it ideal for a sauce that doesn’t require cooking.

Homemade Hand-Tossed Pizza

Onion Powder

Onion powder provides a subtle, sweet onion flavor without the texture of fresh onions. It’s a convenient way to add depth and complexity to the sauce.

Basil

Basil adds a sweet and aromatic note to the sauce. Dried basil is convenient and blends well with the other dried spices, while fresh basil offers a burst of freshness and vibrant flavor.

Sugar

A small amount of sugar helps to balance the acidity of the tomatoes, enhancing their natural sweetness and making the sauce more palatable. It rounds out the flavors and provides a subtle sweetness that complements the savory ingredients.

Red Pepper Flakes

Red pepper flakes add a touch of heat and complexity to the sauce. They provide a subtle kick that enhances the overall flavor profile without overwhelming the sauce.

Salt

Salt is essential for bringing out the flavors of all the ingredients. It enhances the natural sweetness of the tomatoes and balances the other seasonings, making the sauce more flavorful and well-rounded.

By combining these ingredients, you create a well-balanced and flavorful pizza sauce that is rich, savory, and slightly sweet with just the right amount of heat. Each component plays a specific role in enhancing the overall taste and texture, making this sauce a perfect addition to your homemade pizzas.

Swapping out Fresh Herbs for Dried Herbs

The general ratio for converting fresh herbs to dried herbs is 3:1. This means you should use one-third the amount of dried herbs as you would fresh herbs. For example, if a recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of fresh basil, you would use 1 teaspoon of dried basil.
