Keto Friendly Recipe
This decadent dessert is nourishing and eff-free too. With just six ingredients plus the fruit, and a few minutes of preparation, this is a lovely snack or ending to a great meal that can be enjoyed often.
What is Swedish Cream?
Swedish Cream is a dense custard-type dairy dessert. It is a cross between a panna cotta and a crème brulee without all the extra work. There is no need for baking or using a blow torch.
Just heat to 160 degrees Fahrenheit and cool. That’s it.
What are the Ingredients in Swedish Cream?
There are just six ingredients to this Swedish Cream recipe, plus any fruit that you choose to have with it. Fruit is delicious with this creamy vanilla custard-type sauce.
Heavy whipping cream. Whipping cream has such a rich and decadent taste that is simply perfect for helping this dessert taste delicious. The fat in the dairy helps create a silky-smooth and creamy dessert.
Granulated sugar. The sugar will sweeten the cream.
Unflavored gelatin. This helps thicken the mixture.
Sour cream. Helps thicken the mixture, as well as, adding a bit deeper flavor. Just like the whipping cream, this adds to the thick, creamy, and silky texture because of the fat. Note: you can swap out yogurt for the sour cream.
Vanilla Extract. Pairs nicely with the cream and fresh berries.
Almond Extract. It has just a hint of almond flavor.
Fresh Berries. Can be strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, Kiwi, Pineapple, or any other fruit you wish.
How to Make Swedish Cream?
- In a large saucepan, combine the heavy whipping cream with the sugar. Cook and continuously stir over low heat until a thermometer reads 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Remove from heat and sprinkle gelatin over the top of the mixture and immediately whisk until the gelatin is dissolved; approximately 2 minutes to be sure.
- Stir in vanilla and almond extract. Cool 10 minutes.
- Stir in the sour cream.
- Divide into 8 dessert cups and refrigerate at least 1 hour.
- Add cut up fruit just before serving.
It’s a beautifully simple dessert and not too sweet. Perfect for special occasions (because telling guests you’ve made something Swedish just sounds fancy) or everyday occasions, it’s simply a nourishing dessert.
The Perfect Make Ahead Dessert
In fact, it is recommended to make this a few hours ahead of time. There is plenty of time to let the creamy mixture cool down and set. All that is needed for serving is clean and slice fresh berries or add a berry compote and you are ready to serve this dessert. The fruit can be prepared ahead of time too.
In fact, I have had this last in the refrigerator up to three days. It would last five days, but we have always eaten every bit before the end of the three days. It is just so good.
How Long with this stay fresh
Store covered or in an airtight container up to five days. It will last longer without the fruit topping than with. Sometimes the fruit will juice over the cream after it sits for a bit. Therefore, I store the fruit and Swedish Cream separately until I am ready to serve.
