We used a blend of cheeses known for their melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Melting cheeses used include American cheddar, mozzarella, or fontina to ensure it melts before the bread burns. For a uniform test we used American cheese as it is a type of cheese that melts quickly, with good flavor.

Skillet

Nonstick pans heat up quickly and retain heat effectively, ensuring that grilled cheese sandwiches brown evenly under these conditions. While a well-seasoned cast-iron skillet, also equipped with a nonstick surface, offers an alternative, it requires a longer heating time and is not renowned for uniform heat distribution. Stainless steel skillets rank as our least preferred choice due to their tendency to stick to food without the addition of extra oil.

Each sandwich was cooked in the same non-stick pan. Using medium heat, with precise temperature control to ensure consistency. We assessed each spread’s performance in a head-to-head battle, carefully noting the differences at every stage of the grilling process.

Spreading butter on the Side of the Bread

One of the first considerations was the ease of spreading each condiment. Cold butter is not spreadable, it will tear holes in the bread when trying to spread on the side of each slice of bread even if you scrape off the butter with the knife in thin ribbons. Additional time is needed to soften the butter.  Butter, a familiar and pliable choice, glided effortlessly across the bread, coating it evenly.

Mayo, surprisingly, held its ground, offering a smooth and convenient application. Best thing, its ease of use with no additional time is needed to soften the spread as with the butter. The ease of spreading set the tone for the showdown, leaving us eager to discover which spread would triumph.

Advanced Prep

For those who value convenience, the question of advanced prep is crucial. Butter, often requiring softening or melting, can demand a bit of forethought. Mayo, on the other hand, requires no such preparation, making it the quicker option for those impromptu grilled cheese cravings.
